The music inspired by the Haunted Mansion

Buddy Baker and X Atencio's wonderful song from the Haunted Mansion ("Grim Grinning Ghosts [The Screaming Song]") has become a classic tune, associated worldwide with this famous Disney attraction. Following are a few samples of various renditions of this song.

A Grim, Grinning Influence

From swing bands to ragtime pianists to, well, Barenaked Ladies - the Mansion has influenced creative artists around the world. Here are a few samples.

The Swingtips
The Swingtips in Roswell

Contains "Grim Grinning Ghosts"
(Ghost Note Records CDM-555611)

This disc is a musical monument to the many different ways swing rhythm can be inter-weaved in music. The Swingtips were a regular fixture at Walt Disney World for some time, and this tune is a tribute to the band's days playing at the Magic Kingdom. Euro Disney: Feel the Magic
From the Euro Disney Soundtrack Album
Euro Disney: Cést Magique

(Cassette/Compact Disc release; Import)

This album from 1992 - which is also available in a number of other languages, including French and German (pictured) - was only available in Europe, and is now out of print. This particular version contains a French version of Buddy Baker's "Grim Grinning Ghosts." It's not from the Phantom Manor soundtrack; rather, it's a version arranged by Dave Volpe and Ted Ricketts that was recorded specifically for this album of music "inspired" by Disneyland Paris, then known as "Euro Disney."

Chris Calabrese
Ragtime at the Magical Kingdoms
Contains "Grim Grinning Ghosts" (Siren Records; SI4501)

Chris Calabrese has tinkled the ivories on every Disney Main Street from America to Japan. Unlike Scott Joplin's casual rags, Calabrese plays the piano at a furious New-Orleans-pace. His rendition of Baker's "Grim Grinning Ghosts" is, well, astounding. And the album has 20 more songs from the theme parks, along with an interview with Walt himself for good measure. Reviewer Jay R. on Amazon.com says "the upbeat, gentle, main-street American genre of ragtime works perfectly with the upbeat, gentle, main-street American theme of the Disney parks... you could believe that you're listening to him as you walk down Main Street, and maybe you have... Then when I thought it couldn't get any better, I came to the final cut -- an interview of Walt, including a short clip of him doing Mickey's voice. What fun!"

The Ghastly Ones
A-Haunting We Will Go-Go
(Geffen Records; B000007OSU)

This CD, a thrilling combo of horror-go-go and surf rock, should keep you dancing for hours. The track sampled below, "Ghastly Stomp," is the band's instrumental ode to Baker's "Grim Grinning Ghosts." (In fact, the limited edition vinyl single of this song was shipped in a Shag-designed sleeve based on the Haunted Mansion attraction poster.)

Disney's Music from the Park
Contains "Grim Grinning Ghosts," performed by the Barenaked Ladies

(Walt Disney Records 60915-7)
Out of Print

This album contains a rocking rendition of G3 from a hip Canadian band called the Barenaked Ladies, who produced and arranged the track themselves. It adds a quirky sensibility to the lyric, and feels like the kind of piece that might have recorded for the graveyard in the attraction were it composed in today's musical climate. It's definitely a worthwhile disc, if you can find a copy. Check the link above for availability, or you might try eBay.

“Disney Forever” Custom CDs
Featuring "Grim Grinning Ghosts" and other Haunted Mansion sounds & cues
(RedDotNet Digital On-Demand)

"Disney Forever" kiosks, which have been discontinued, used to allow you to program your own custom audio CD from dozens of audio and music selections from the soundtracks of various Disney park shows and attractions. This straight-from-the-source audio offered a rare look at a few of the various musical cues of the Mansion, including Haunted Mansion Foyer Music, Haunted Mansion Doom Buggy Boarding Music, Haunted Mansion Ballroom Organ, Haunted Mansion Graveyard Music, and Haunted Mansion Exit Crypt Music. The 1999 Haunted Mansion 30th Anniversary CD was also made available at these kiosks. There was also an elegant instrumental track of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" that used to be exclusively played in Club 33 which was made available on the system (excerpt below.)
